I’m With The Band Tom Campbell and Maisie Peters

Posted on January 8, 2024

Today, the 23-year-old from Steyning, UK, is accustomed to performing before much larger audiences, as she draws energy and enthusiasm, not just from family, but from a rapidly growing group of fans around the world.

Tom Campbell has enjoyed witnessing this young star’s rapid rise. As her lighting designer, he’s been there as his client has become the youngest British female to reach the top of the UK album charts in a decade, and won the first Rolling Stone UK Breakthrough Award.

All along the way, Campbell has worked closely with his client on creating dynamic, multi-faceted looks that reflect her animated and engaging stage presence, as well as the many moods of her music.

Catching a rising star, is always nice for a lighting designer, but what makes this case especially rewarding is the personality of the star herself. Success has done nothing to diminish her enthusiasm, friendliness and eagerness to try new ideas and expand her creative horizons. This quality, along with Peters’ wonderful sense of humor, have made her a joy to work with, as the Bristol-based designer explains in this interview.

You’ve been with Maisie almost from the beginning. Now that her career has taken off, has it had any effect on how you and the team approach designing shows?
“We’ve collaborated for several years now, spanning two album campaigns. Despite Maisie’s growing prominence, our approach hasn’t shifted significantly; our goal has consistently been to elevate her stage presence while ensuring she remains the primary focus. Presently, we do pay closer attention to aligning with her evolving style and energy, as well as fine-tuning aspects to complement her changes.

We know Maisie is very dynamic on stage, moving around a bit. How do you account for this in your designs?
“Maisie’s motion plays a pivotal role. I ensure the lighting adjusts accordingly by highlighting her dynamism while preserving visual impact and keeping her as the central focus. We keep the focus on her during her serene acoustic singer-songwriter moments, where we infuse a theatrical touch, as well as with the more intense segments from her recent album, which can be rather rock-influenced at times!”

She also likes to interact with fans. Does this influence your work?
“Maisie’s interaction with fans definitely influences my work. I aim to create moments where her connection with the audience shines through the lighting.”

Are there any types of lighting looks that Maisie absolutely loves? Are there any she likes you to avoid?
“Maisie loves vibrant and atmospheric looks that complement her music. There are a few things we tend to avoid but these are rare. There are almost no rules — if we’re feeling it, we go with it.”

What kind of input does Maise have in the design process?
“Maisie’s contribution is priceless. She actively engages, sharing ideas and preferences, creating a highly collaborative design procedure. From providing detailed and precise notes about her vision for each song’s stage setup, to brainstorming unconventional concepts during odd hours, be it on the road, or at an airport at 4 am. She will give her input about every aspect of the show, such as the notion of falling backwards into a blackout at the end of the main set. She consistently adds unique input. Her idea of sending of a GIF featuring the pink panther in a spotlight actually had a notable impact on the creation of the song “Bat Shit Crazy (BSC). That’s how good she is.”

You’ve been to a lot of places with Maisie. Does any single show stand out?
“Back in November she played a sold-out Wembley arena show, with Ed Sheeran coming out to play a song. That was a pretty fun evening!”

Maisie is known to have a great sense of humor. What personality traits make her fun to work with?
“Maisie’s humor keeps things light and enjoyable. Her spontaneity and openness make collaboration a breeze.”

If you were at a party and you told someone you work for Maisie Peters and they asked “what is that like?” What would you say?
“Working for Maisie is a creative rollercoaster! It’s a perfect blend of hard work, creativity, and loads of laughter.”
