The owner of UK-based SXS Events didn’t waste any time reinventing his business once the pandemic hit, giving it a new name (Pytch) and a new focus as a virtual production studio. Since then, he’s been streaming everything from corporate meetings to planetarium shows. After eight successful months, he’s growing, expanding studio space, and adding team members. Looking back, he shares insights into why his venture worked.

COVID-19 has changed a lot of things, including the relationship between designers and the spaces they light. The owner of ReuxLight experienced this first hand this summer, when he lit a “virtual tour” by Wallows at Hollywood’s Roxy Theatre, even though he never set foot in the iconic club.

Lighting designers have always had to adjust to unique stage configurations, but never more so than in the past eight months when the unusual has become commonplace, as show producers have struggled to adapt to pandemic restrictions. A pair of LDs, one in California, the other in the UK, share their experience lighting out-of-the-ordinary stages.
